What Is a Process Group? Exploring Connection Through Group Therapy
You want to say something, but someone else starts speaking. You decide your experience probably isn’t important enough anyway.
Someone disagrees with you. You smile and tell them it’s fine, while your stomach tightens.
You leave a room wondering whether you talked too much—or whether anyone noticed you at all.
These everyday moments can reveal a lot about how we experience ourselves around other people. A process group offers space to explore them.
What happens in a process group?
A process group is a facilitated form of group therapy where the relationships within the group become part of the work.
Members share their experiences, but the focus also includes what happens between people in the room. Who do you feel comfortable with? When do you withdraw? What happens when you want something, feel misunderstood, or disagree?
Rather than only talking about relationships elsewhere in your life, you have an opportunity to notice your patterns as they happen.
Bringing the body into the conversation
Through the lens of somatic psychotherapy and Core Energetics, we also pay attention to the body.
You might notice your chest tightening before you speak, your breathing changing when someone looks at you, or the effort involved in holding back tears.
These sensations do not have one automatic meaning. They offer a starting point for curiosity: What am I feeling? What do I need? What feels difficult to express?
You don’t need to be good at groups
You don’t need to arrive confident, articulate or ready to share everything.
Good group facilitation includes attention to pace, boundaries and whether the group is suitable for each participant. Confidentiality agreements matter, although no facilitator can guarantee another member’s behaviour.
The aim is to create conditions where you can gradually explore being more fully yourself in relationship.
