What is Core Energetics?
If you've found your way to this page, you've probably come across the term Core Energetics and wondered what it actually means.
It's not a household name, yet. But for the people who've experienced it, it tends to be one of those things they wish they'd found sooner.
Here's a plain-language guide to what it is, where it came from, what a session looks like, and whether it might be right for you.
Where Core Energetics comes from
Core Energetics was developed by John Pierrakos, a psychiatrist who trained under Wilhelm Reich, one of the first clinicians to argue that emotional experience isn't just a mental phenomenon but a bodily one. Pierrakos later integrated the spiritual psychology work of Eva Broch (later his wife) to create a model that works with body, mind, emotions, will, and spirit as an interconnected whole.
The lineage runs through Freud and Jung, through Reich's body-centred approach, and into Pierrakos' own clinical innovations. It's a rigorous, credentialled modality with a four-year diploma program delivered through the Institute of Body Psychotherapy and affiliated training centres internationally.
It's not a wellness trend. It has roots, a framework, and a clear training pathway.
What makes it different from talk therapy
Most people are familiar with talk therapy, the therapeutic conversation that explores thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and history. Talk therapy is valuable and effective. But it works primarily through the mind.
Core Energetics works through the body as well.
The fundamental premise is that our emotional history, particularly the parts we couldn't fully process, doesn't just live in our memories and beliefs. It lives in our bodies. In patterns of tension and holding. In the way we breathe (or don't). In the postures and physical habits that developed as protective responses and then became structural.
Core Energetics works directly with those patterns. Not just talking about the tension in your shoulders, but helping the body find a way to release it, along with whatever it's been holding.
What a session actually looks like
Sessions always begin with conversation. We talk about what's present for you, what's been coming up, what you've noticed, what feels alive today. Sometimes that conversation is where most of the session lives.
As things deepen, we might move into some body-based work. This could involve:
• Breathwork: becoming aware of patterns in breathing and using the breath to access deeper feeling states
• Grounding exercises: physical exercises that help the nervous system settle and feel safe
• Movement: specific movements that help release energy held in particular areas of the body
• Body awareness: tracking sensations, noticing where feeling lives in the body, following that thread
None of this is confronting or forced. The pace is always led by you, by what your body is ready for, not by what I think should happen. Safety and containment are the foundation of how I work, not an afterthought.
Most people leave a session feeling lighter, clearer, or simply more themselves. Sometimes there's emotion. Sometimes there's a surprising calm. Always there's a sense of movement.
Who responds well to Core Energetics
In my practice, Core Energetics tends to work particularly well for people who:
Have done talk therapy and found it helpful but incomplete, like they understand the pattern but can't seem to shift it
Carry stress or emotion in the body, tension, chronic pain, fatigue, gut issues, symptoms that don't fully resolve with medical treatment
Struggle with anxiety, particularly the kind that lives in the body rather than just the mind
Are working through relationship patterns, difficulty with intimacy, recurring conflict, attachment struggles
Have a sense that there's more available to them than what they're currently experiencing, more aliveness, more connection, more of themselves
Common questions
Do I need to be physically fit or flexible? No. The bodywork is gentle and adapted to what each person is comfortable with. Physical fitness is not relevant.
Is it like massage or bodywork? No. There is no physical contact in a standard Core Energetics session. The body-based work is self-directed, guided by me, done by you.
Will I be asked to do anything I'm not comfortable with? Never. The work is always client-led and paced by your readiness. You are in control throughout.
Does it work online? Yes, more than most people expect. The breathwork, grounding, and body awareness all translate well to an online format. Many of my clients have done their deepest work over video.
Where I work
I see clients in Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads. I also work online, which means if you're anywhere else in Australia, location is no barrier.
